Most traditional fall-alert systems rely on something a person has to wear. Ambient sensing takes a different approach: the room itself can detect movement patterns without asking the resident to remember a watch or pendant.
What does ambient fall detection mean?
Instead of recording video, a privacy-first sensor can use technologies such as mmWave radar, time-of-flight sensing, or other non-camera signals to estimate movement and position inside a room.
Why remove the wearable?
A wearable only works when it is worn, charged, and within reach. A fixed home sensor is designed to stay in the background and work continuously in the room where it is installed.
Where this approach makes the most sense
Bathrooms and bedrooms are especially interesting because privacy matters and falls can have serious consequences. The goal is not to replace emergency services or medical care, but to shorten the time between an unusual event and a family member becoming aware of it.
